Length: 4,200~
Author on LJ: [info]pepper_ckua
Author Website: Her gen fiction, Her slash fiction
Why this must be read: Because even though she’s written many, many stories in Starsky and Hutch, this is one of her early ones and still my all-time favourite. It’s the rhythm and poetry of it – unique to Pepper - it's the way she draws you in from the very opening paragraph (quoted below), to the moments of ‘the in-between’ that she then illustrates in the lives of Starsky, Hutch, Dobey, and original characters a case brings them into contact with. And all rounded off with a lovely touch of hurt/comfort.

There is the time of in-between.

In-between when the phone rings and when it is answered.

In-between a toddler’s fall to the floor and the inevitable wail.

In-between the pull of a trigger and the bullet meeting its target.

In-between is the time one is awake and then falls over the edge into sleep, when possibility can make an unexpected turn.

In-between the jump from the bridge and contact with the hard surface of water.

In-between the time one sees a cop at the door and knowing in a few moments the bottom is going to fall out of your world.

The in-between can be only a few seconds. Or a few minutes. Sometimes it can take up an entire lifetime.

The In-Between

Why this must be read:

I’m always fascinated by stories that attempt a background for Gene, a reason for why he is the way he is and in this story Trollopfop does a great job of exploring the events that might shape, and even perhaps eventually damage, a relationship between Gene and Sam, events that have happened before they even meet.

Friday

I ended up using none of your delicious-sounding veggie recipes, but one our features editor recommended: black bean salad with avocado, cilantro, and banana. It was delicious, pretend-summery and all sorts of exciting things such as vegan, gluten-free, nut-free, etc. I foresee making bigger versions for many potlucks to come.

Saturday

Much Ado readthrough )

Jew party )

Session )

Sunday

Made it to Hebrew class early (OH YES), albeit fiercely dehydrated, and afterward had a brief wander through Jewland to buy a menorah and a scoop of kosher-certified ice cream. Returned home to rap out another few hundred words about Madame Bovary (I think) and nap briefly, then attended a poetry reading down the road at the King's Head with Rosh Chodesh Partner Woman and a few other folks from the party on Saturday. I got home at what I thought was the very respectable time of 10pm, revised my paper a little, cleaned my flat properly(ish), made a cup of chamomile tea and French toast with blueberries, and fell asleep before 11.

This morning

7:00 am - alarm goes off
7-8 am - alarm goes off intermittently, while I slap at it and dream about shopping for menorahs with Sponsoring Rabbi and my mother
8:25 am - blearily open eyes
8:26 am - realise that train to work leaves, four blocks from my flat, in eight minutes.
8:29 am - check: am I wearing trousers? am I wearing a shirt? am I wearing shoes?
8:30 am - dash out door
8:34 am - catch train with ninety seconds to spare! I am great!

All in all, I am still very pleased with Kilburn. And I got to work on time! I am still less than convinced that I am being very efficient with my time and energy – about half of the weekend's mad social activity was vitalizing and refreshing, and about half of it was exhausting and irritating. Clearly I need to figure out which will be which -- BUT HOW?! I think the Malicious Privilege Sensor is probably still the best solution to this problem, but I don't know how to invent one yet. :(

Other good things

  • My Yuletide assignment is about three things that are similar to ones I wanted to request, but pared off my list. Hooray, it's a present for both of us! :D
  • I have been still doing the thing where you use baking soda and vinegar to wash your hair instead of commercial shampoos, and it is delightful; it feels like I have used magic conditioner all the time.
  • My menorah is great; it's small and heavy, with a star of David at the epicentre of all the branches. It's very simple but sturdy.
  • There is a Baskin Robbins 31 Flavors on Golders Green Road, to file under "dangerous information".

Ring any bells? I've trawled jwfics on delicious and still come up empty handed.

Why this must be read: This fic isn't plot with porn, or porn with plot - it's both at the same time, weighed perfectly so that neither overpowers the other and nothing feels tacked on. At 25,000 words, the plot is well-realized and fitted to both characters and their originating canons, the crossover feels natural and unforced, and the porn -

    Well.

    The porn is really hot.

so i havent introduced myself yet.

ive had ocd practically my whole life. i was diagnosed at 17 years old. i am now 27 years old. started out as handwashing as a child. then eventually also started checking. without meds i was obsessed with symmetry of my nostrils and eyelids and stuff too. i was constantly trying to make them open the same amount.

i take luvox. it helps a little, but its still always there. i do my own desensitization therapy with myself when the handwashing gets too bad. i force myself to get my hands dirty and then try to go a couple days without washing my hands. that feels terrible, but it helps a little...although temporarily. im not afraid of germs really...only salmonella and e coli. i cant stand textures like oily and sticky and i cant handle smells on my hands.

thats really all i can think of to say at the moment. nice meeting all of you :)

msp_hacker @ 10:53pm: I still cannot speak about Children of Earth for more than five minutes without breaking out into CAPLOCKS OF RAGE four months after the series aired.

Sometime in the future [info]juliet316 will produce a post on Gwen's Heroine's Journey. I was thinking about that myself the other night, and was fairly pleased with it until I got to the "final task" portion. I was thinking that her test was keeping the kids safe, and if it was, then she failed her task. And, then, got all the traditional rewards of suceding in her task.

I'm not saying that Gwen did not deserve having her family alive at the end of the series, nor her being given the task of rebuilding Torchwood. I blame RTD. I blame him HARD. I mean, when you manage to fuck up one of the basic units of storytelling, you need to seriously examine what the fuck you're writing.

On the bright side? RTD is still better than Frank Miller. If you have never heard of Frank Miller, one of the things he's written is Batman kidnapping Dick Grayson ( Age 12 ), keeping him in the Bat Cave, and made him catch rats for food until he earned the privilege of being fed human food. For a slightly more humorous take, Linkara reviewed the first two books of All Star Batman and Robin here. Yesterday I dared myself to read series set in that universe, and I chickened out around chapter five. It was one of the more horrifying stories I've ever read.

    Not feeling the love.

    What I remember loving...ain't there.

What is apparently new/changed/remade different....ain't working for me.

Ian McKellan is always a joy to watch: otherwise, bleh.

And I resent/resist the network's PUSH to their stupid site: "get more information about X part of show in 30 seconds." Then commercial. Then reprise of a few scenes, and "learning more about X will get you more into the world of the PRISONER so go to ourwebsite."

And only about three or four corporations decided to advertise, so I sat through the same ad sequence over and over and over...seemed to be a fuckmetricton of ads too.

And I really don't like this aggressive marketing of official sites (OK, old skool fan, we didn't have official sites, we MADE OUR OWN.)

    Meh.

I watched the whole two hours (and I hadn't realized it was this blitz mini series--I was thinking, yay, a new weekly series). I was "meh." Plus, it was Entwife's turn online.

Not feeling the least amount of interest....

Last crossover rec from me this month...

Title: Playing for Keeps Till the End of Time by Lacey McBain
    Pairing: Castiel/Dean
    Author on LJ: [info]laceymcbain
    Author Website: Stickyman Press
Why this must be read: This is an example of what a good fusion should be. Lacey has brought the Supernatural characters into the Highlander 'verse, giving them roles that fit the Highlander world without losing what makes them Supernatural characters. While Dean is not a Hunter and Castiel is not an Angel, Lacey keeps them in character, using SPN characters for conflicts that are recognizably SPN conflicts even if they're cloaked in the Highlander mystique. Castiel takes over from Methos as the oldest Immortal who "watches" himself. Dean is a former Marine who is in town after the death of his brother Sam, a Watcher (though he's not aware of this.) He falls into the company of Castiel and through that, adventure and further drama unwinds. You don't really need to know anything about SPN in order to enjoy it, though it will probably enhance your enjoyment since you'll understand the various tensions between the characters, but Lacey does a pretty good job of making it enjoyable for fans of both series.

Author Website: Blood, Love & Rhetoric
Why this must be read: I don't actually know much about X-files, not being a fan of the series, but this is one of the fics I read when I want a pick-me-up. This is the story where Methos and Alex both decide to give up on their respective crushes. With humor woven throughout, Methos and Alex show an understanding and recognition of each other before deciding to give up on their respective crushes and try for something real with one another.

    Title: Pas de Trois
    Pairing: Methos/Jack Harkness/Ianto Jones
    Author on LJ: [info]aeron_lanart
    Author Website: The Gateway
Why this must be read: A. Lanart's Mystery 'verse began as a way for Jack to learn how to be an immortal (lower case "i" intentionally.) and evolved into a complex universe that followed the Torchwood canon 'verse, with the addition of Methos. Unlike most fics that cross with Torchwood, Methos doesn't join Torchwood; instead, he visits periodically as friend and lover. It also turns out that Ianto used to be a Watcher, though is presumed dead at Canary Wharf - something that is tangentially important for one of the most sensual scenes in this. Pas de Trois is my favorite of the series and for something that is mostly a PWP, it also holds a lot more. This is the fic that starts the Ianto/Jack/Methos as lovers relationship. What is lovely about this, is the lovely complexity of emotion from all three. By this time, Jack has separate relationships with Methos and Ianto; the decision to add Ianto to the Jack/Methos relationship does not feel forced. You can read this without reading the rest of the 'verse, but the whole 'verse is well worth a read.

    rainbow_goddess @ 5:52pm: Kittens, real and imaginary
I frequently call Chaya "kitten" while Monster calls her "baby."

I recently started playing a new game on Facebook called "My Kitten." In this game you adopt a kitten (I chose a grey Persian) and give it a name (I named my kitten Grimalkin.) Then you buy food and kitten accessories for it (litter box, collar, food dish) and take it to "pet school" (where the kitten learns things like to come when called and to use the litter box) and enter it into kitten races. There's a little bar-graph type of thing on the screen that will show how much food the kitten has, how much energy, how much education, and what the kitten's mood is.

Yesterday when I signed in I noticed that my kitten was running low on food. I checked the game menu and said out loud, "Okay, how do I feed my kitten?" Chaya was right behind my chair at that time. Monster said, "You get out of your chair, leave the computer, go to the cupboard, take the food out, and pour it into the kitten's dish."

steamedwords @ 5:16pm: betrayed by the swine
I had H1N1 week before last, at least, my doctor thought that's what it was. It could just as easily have been the regular seasonal flu, however.

It started on Wednesday morning; I woke up with a bit of a cough and scratchy throat. I felt fine otherwise, and assumed I must have kicked up some dust or something while cleaning Tuesday night. I left for work at 8:10, feeling fine. By 9:00, muscle aches had set in and the cough was much worse. By 10:00 my head was splitting and throat had escalated from scratching to burning, so I decided I needed to go home. By the time I got home and located a thermometer, at around 10:40, my temperature was already above 101.

My doctor's office managed to fit me in at 4, and kindly hooked me up with some Tamiflu. My doc stressed the importance of water, vitamin c, rest, and positive visualization. "Think of a time when you were well and life was good, and you really will get well faster," he said.

Positive visualization was admittedly difficult Wednesday night, which was the closest thing to hell I can imagine in recent memory. I couldn't sleep; everything hurt too much. I watched some Firefly and some MST3K, but giggling made me cough more, which just made me more miserable. [info]raistlinbrown made some quip like, "Your love of pigs finally caught up with you," which was funny once I felt better, but not at the time.

Things steadily improved Thursday and Friday, thanks mainly to [info]notasthewolf making sure I ate and drank constantly, and my consuming epic amounts of Vitamin C and Advil Cold and Sinus. My fever broke late Thursday and never spiked back up. I was still a little tired and grumpy throughout the weekend and sneezy till the end of Monday.

Overall, it wasn't a big deal. I ended up missing a screening of The Road attended by Viggo himself and a read/signing of Eating Animals by Jonathan Safran Foer, both of which bummed me out. I was more bummed about the huge price tag on the Tamiflu and the lost wages from staying home for two days, but now I'm mostly just grateful it wasn't longer.

-- President Obama decides to try in U.S. civilian courts international non-citizen terrorists who attacked both civilian and military targets and committed mass-murder. Oh, and the trial is in New York City, very near Ground Zero (does Obama remember what happened there?). Hm, discovery, jury of peers, conferring Constutitional rights to terrorists...What could go wrong?

-- President Obama decides none of the Afghanistan options are good enough for him and so dumps them all for a restart. Wastes considerable time and tax-dollars playing with his Magic 8 ball.

-- President Obama tells Congress to back-off its investigation of Fort Hood while the FBI and CIA are investigating. Y'know, because the goverment can't even walk and chew gum right.

-- President Obama wraps up the week in his usual style. He "changes" over 200 years of American protocol and embarasses his countrymen by bowing to the Emperor of Japan. Now he "hopes" that he doesn't get his arse handed to him when he gets back Stateside, but honestly what is he worried about? As far as the media is concerned there is nothing to see here.
