Usually I don't post stuff like this, but this enraged me.

Teacher Berates Student Over Choice of Candidate

Who would do that to a child?! Unlocked because I don't fucking care anymore.

Wow, that's rather ridiculous. Especially considering that, at that age, the kids are just parroting what their parents believe, anyhow. It does give me another reminder of why I kinda blocked out the whole presidential race, extreme polarization is just so frustrating. If someone asked me about who I was voting for, I'd just start talking about the Richmond mayoral race instead!

Seriously! You don't do that to kids. I refused to even discuss politics with my students.

That teacher was ridiculously hypocritical.

Frankly I don't think teachers need to be speaking to students about political persuasion OR religion unless they're a Government teacher in high school or a Sunday school teacher. In either of those situations, the parents involved have an idea of what their child is signing up for.

I kept hearing alot of stories about children involvement in this past election. I'm all for parents talking to their children about it, but I just don't think there's any safe way for teachers to really discuss it with elementary or middle school kids w/out approaching it with bias one way or another.

Indeed. Talking to your students about politics really should be on that unwritten rule of things not to talk about. I don't even think my college professors brought politics up much.

Wow. Just wow. It always irritated me when professors brought up politics in class whether I agreed with them or not. The typical class is a lecture environment, not a forum for debate, and if you try to bring an opposing view up you'll just find yourself penalized. My brother had a teacher in college who used to push her political views and he would challenge her. She hated him because he once proved that she was citing incorrect facts to back up her argument - teachers don't know everything. Needless to say, I don't think he got a very good grade in the class.

But this is even worse - to do this in elementary school? To tell a kid their parents are WRONG? That's just messed up and it undermines the parents. At that age, kids SHOULD be listening to their family whether you agree with their political beliefs or not.
